Katherine Heigl (born Katherine Marie Heigl in West End, Washington D.C. on November 24, 1978) is an American actress, film producer and former fashion model. Katherine became a model at the age of nine when a visiting aunt decided to take photographs of her and send them to modeling agencies with the permission of Katherine’s parents. Within weeks Katherine signed with Wilhelmina Models. Katherine’s first leading role was in the 1994 comedy, My Father the Hero. She was still in high school at this time and continued to balance her film and modeling work with her academics. However, Katherine dropped out of high school after her sophomore year to pursue a career in Hollywood. In 1995, she starred in the Steven Seagal action thriller Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. In 1999 though she turned her attention to television when she accepted the role of Isabel Evans on the science fiction TV drama Roswell, a role that was expanded in the show’s second and third seasons. She appeared in several other TV shows before landing what would become her most high-profile role to date, as medical intern Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens on Grey’s Anatomy, an ABC medical drama. The show is still one of the highest-rated television series on broadcast television. Also in 2006, she filmed Knocked Up, a comedy from writer/director Judd Apatow, starring opposite Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd. In 2008 she starred in the film, 27 Dresses and appeared alongside James Marsden. Katherine starred with Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth in 2009, which was made on a budget of $38 million but earned $205 million at the worldwide box office. In 2010 Katherine was released from her Grey’s Anatomy contract after not showing up for work when she was supposed to. She said her departure was not about advancing her film career but that she wanted to focus more on her family. Since leaving Grey’s Anatomy, Katherine has appeared in films such as, New Year’s Eve (2011), One for the Money (2012), The Big Wedding (2013), Home Sweet Hell (2015), and Unforgettable (2016).

The couple got engaged in June 2006 after meeting a year earlier on the set of Josh’s music video for “Only You.” Katherine and Josh have two adopted children together, Nancy Leigh (Naleigh) Mi-Eun Kelley and Adalaide Marie Hope Kelley. Naleigh was adopted in 2009 from South Korea, the birthplace of Katherine’s adoptive sister Meg. Adalaide was adopted in 2012 from the U.S. Heigl’s brother-in-law is singer Charles Kelley of the country music trio Lady Antebellum.
