Gilberto Gil (born Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil on June 26, 1942) is an Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter. He started his musical career by playing Bossa Nova, a popular Brazilian music style, which led into him honing his skills as a writer. His lyrics were often geared toward political awareness and social activism. Gilberto was a key figure in the Brasileira and Tropicália movements in the 1960s and his favorite genres to play include Rock music, samba, African music and reggae. He is set to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics with Caetano Veloso, who is Brazil’s former minister of culture and one of the country’s most critically acclaimed artists, as well as new pop sensation Anitta.

Personal Life:
Giberto has been married four times. He is still with his fourth wife Flora Nair Giordana Gil Moreira and the pair share five children. Their fifth child, Pedro Gil, was tragically killed due to a car accident in 1990. Their daughter, Preta Gil, is an accomplished singer and actress.
