Bio:
Eric Fanning (born Erick Kenneth Fanning on July 2, 1968 in Kalamazoo, Michigan) is an American government official. Eric graduated from Centerville High School in Ohio in 1986. He enrolled in Dartmouth College and graduated in 1990 with a Bachelor’s Degree in History. With an interest in government and politics, Eric participated in the 1988 New Hampshire primary contest. Afterwards, he moved to Washington D.C. and got a job working on the House Armed Service Committee. He was later worked as a special assistant to the Office of the Secretary of the Defense. Eric served as a deputy undersecretary and deputy chief management office for the Department of the Navy in July 2009. From April 2013 to Feb. 2015, Eric served as the Under Secretary of the Air Force and, until June 2015, Chief of Staff for the U.S. Secretary of Defense. In Sept. 2015, President Barack Obama nominated Eric to be the United States Secretary of the Army. Upon confirmation by the US Senate, he would be the 22nd Secretary in the US Army’s history and be the first openly gay official at the head of any American military.

Eric was a member of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund from 2004 to 2007. He supports allowing openly transgender persons to serve in the military and favors the US Military adopting a policy prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
