Caetano Veloso (born Caetano Emanuel Viana Telles Veloso in Santo Amaro da Purificacao, Bahia, Brazil on August 7, 1942) is a composer, singer, guitarist, writer and political activist. His name first became known in the 1960’s during his participation in the Brazilian musical movement, Tropicalismo, which also comprised of theatre and poetry. At the time, Brazil was ruled under strict military dictatorship that lasted for nearly 21 years. Caetano used his creative sense of expression as a way to protest against the military, which lead to the formation of Tropicalismo – a collaborative movement organized by experimental musicians and artists.
Best Known For:
Besides contributing to the Tropicalismo group, Caetano is best known for winning Latin Recording Artist Person of the Year in 2012. He has also won nine Latin Grammy Awards and two Grammy Awards.
Personal Life:
Caetano married actress Andrea Gadelha on November 21, 1967. Together, they have one son named Moreno, and one daughter named Julia who died only days after she was born. Caetano and Andrea went on the separate in 1983. Caetano got remarried to Paula Lavigne, with whom he has two more sons, Zeca, and Tom. Their marriage lasted 20 years before divorcing in 2004. Paula and Caetano still work together on music to this very day.
