After a day full of confusion over whether or not Tom Petty had actually died, the 66-year-old rock star was officially confirmed deceased on the night of Oct. 2. Following the news of his passing, fans began to mourn the great loss. This led to reflection on how many amazing rock legends who have had their life cut short. Musicians like Prince, David Bowie, and George Michael all left us just last year. But the trend of rock stars dying young is one that has gone back for decades. And we’re not just talking young, we’re talking young. With icons like Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix both dying at just 27 years old. It’s an all too common pattern for musicians who have struggled with addiction and substance abuse, but some of these artists were fine just days before their demise.
There is no way to make sense of the loss of these amazing singers. But when we look at the gifts they gave the world in the short time they were here, we know they have at least left a mark that will outlive all of us.
