It’s the ultimate rematch! Minnesota and LA will meet once again in the WNBA Finals and fans are pumped! Here’s everything to know before the epic matchup!
It’s all going down on Sunday, Sept 24! The Minnesota Lynx and Los Angeles Sparks will tip off the 2017 WNBA Finals 2017 at 3:30 PM ET on ABC! The Sparks, also the defending champs, have the chance to make history this time around, if all goes as planned; they can become the first team to win back-to-back titles since they earned the accolade in 2001 and 2002. Can they do it?!
But, don’t underestimate the Lynx, who have home-court advantage. Not to mention, this will be their sixth Finals appearance in the last seven years. And, this is the ultimate outcome for WNBA fans, since this is the second straight year the top-seeded Lynx and second-seeded Sparks are facing off in the Finals. Both teams are bound to put on a spectacular show, seeing as they’re the two teams with the best regular-season records.
And, speaking of making history, this is the second Finals rematch in WNBA history! As you may know, the Comets and New York Liberty played for the championship in 1999 and 2000. Now, Minnesota and Los Angeles are each striving to become the WNBA’s second four-time champion. The Houston Comets were the only ones to accomplish such a feat.
And, you know these two teams are going to bring it because they’ve both finished first and second in offensive and defensive ratings. Minnesota finished the regular season with the WNBA’s best offensive and defensive rating, with the Sparks coming in second for both.
The Playoffs started on Sept. 6 with the WNBA following their new format, which went into effect last season. The new format consists of eight teams with the highest regular-season winning percentages regardless of conference, seeded based on their record. For the full breakdown, click here.
Aren’t you excited? — We know we are! But, there’s one WNBA fanatic who may take the award for the league’s biggest fan — Gabrielle Union! When the actress isn’t working or supporting her NBA hubby, Dwyane Wade, you can catch her court side at WNBA games. She recently shot multiple videos with the WNBA, which highlighted their “Watch Me Work” campaign, also executed by the NBA [who just launched another chapter].
“People say women are strong, fierce, and inspirational,” Gabrielle captioned one of three videos. “But you know what else? They’re athletic as hell. If you need proof, get yourself a seat to a WNBA game. Watching these women play isn’t just entertaining – it’s empowering. Their athletic ability, hard work and determination are unmatched. Cheers to the WNBA – you all play for keeps!”
