Addison Russell isn’t letting anything hold him back from playing the game — including wild claims that he cheated on & abused his wife Melisa! Just 1 day after denying he beat his spouse, the Chicago Cubs shortstop was back in the clubhouse, revealing he felt ‘sad’ in light of the shocking accusations.
Addison Russell, 23, is back! The Chicago Cubs shortstop returned to Wrigley Field on June 9, just one day after denying accusations that he abused and cheated on his wife of one year, Melisa, 23. While Addison was not in the lineup for the afternoon game, which was played against the Colorado Rockies, he was available to play off the bench, if needed. He also spoke to reporters, saying the social media posts that led to a Major League Baseball investigation of possible domestic violence between him and his wife made him “sad.” “I didn’t show up yesterday. I was watching the game on TV. I felt sad, man,” Addison said.
“This is what I do. This is what I love. I love being here, in this clubhouse with the boys, having fun. This is my home.” Apparently the Cubs told the athlete NOT to come to the ballpark for their June 8 game against the Rockies, as they assessed he wasn’t in a good place mentally to be at work. “We were anticipating that he would be back here today, although, we left it open,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s good to have him back. We had a great conversation and it seems to me, maybe mentally, he’s in a little bit better place.”
The drama started with an Instagram post Melisa posted on June 7. And while the message has since been taken down, the brunette beauty accused her hubby of cheating on her in the caption, and even implied that the couple was splitting up. “Being free to be able to make your own choices for your own happiness beats being cheated on, lied to, & disrespected any day,” she wrote. “#herestonewbeginnings #onlygetsbetterfromhere.” However, things quickly escalated after Melisa’s friend, Carlie Reed, left a disturbing comment on the pic.
“Hateful is cheating on your wife, mentally and physically abusing her,” Carlie wrote. “Melisa didn’t want that out, but I’ll say it. He hit her. In front of [the kids] Aiden and Mila.” Bold words, right? Addison has since denied the shocking abuse allegations, saying via a statement through his team, “Any allegation that I have abused my wife is false and hurtful. For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”
As for the Cubs, the team’s president, Theo Epstein, addressed the situation in a post-game press conference on June 8. “It’s honestly such an early stage that I don’t think it would be appropriate to do anything other than say we’re going to let it develop and act as appropriately as we can,” he said. “We care about all the parties involved. Making any judgement would be inappropriate.”
