That would’ve made Gregg Allman proud! Superfan Jason Aldean, along with Darius Rucker and Lady Antebellum’s Charles Kelley brought the CMT Awards to their feet on June 7th in a tribute to the star to open the show.
It was tragic news on May 27th when the music world lost the great Gregg Allman, but there was no better way to honor the beloved singer than with a special Jason Aldean performance at the 2017 CMT Awards. Jason was joined by Darius Rucker and Charles Kelley of Lady Antebellum to sing an Allman Brothers classic to kick off the show. The trio of country superstars started off their version of ‘Midnight Rider’ with an amazing acapella riff that led into a rocking, guitar driven explosion of sound. And yes, they did get a standing ovation for their efforts!
Jason, who admitted he’s been lifelong fan of the Allman Brothers, posted a personal message online following the sad news of Gregg’s death. “He made it seem possible for a kid to come out of Macon, Georgia, make a name for himself and make it in this business,” he wrote. “He was such an inspiration to so many of us that tried so hard to imitate him but could just never quite do it the same. Thanks for the music and thanks for making me believe I could achieve my music dreams too.”
Just give days prior to the show, Gregg was laid to rest, mourned by his family and friends at a service Macon, Georgia. The rock legend, who died at just 69, was remembered at a private funeral at a small chapel that was attended by 100 mourners, which include former President Jimmy Carter and his ex-wife Cher. The latter, who was married to Greg from 1975 to 1979 and share one son, Elijah, with him, could only say that her heart was ‘broken’ on the day of his passing and was clearly emotional on the day of his funeral.

Though he may no longer be with us, clearly his music and legacy will live on, especially as he was beloved by such great talent like Jason, Darius and Charles.
HollywoodLifers, did you like the tribute? Did you think it was befitting?
