Season two of ’13 Reasons Why’ will start shooting soon, but what will the story be about? We’ve gathered everything that we know so far about the highly-anticipated season two.
The final episode of season one of 13 Reasons Why left us with many questions and left many characters’ storylines up in the air — many we’ll see somewhat of a resolution of during season two. Executive producer Brian Yorkey recently confirmed that next season will include a small time jump, picking up a few months after the first season ended with Hannah’s suicide. So, what else do we know?
1. More Hannah Baker story
While she will not conduct the voice overs next season, there’s much more to come from Hannah’s story and life in season two. “I think season two will give us a look at a lot of things—a lot of the events that we think we know, we may learn are more complicated than we thought, and Hannah is even more complicated than we saw season one,” Brian said during an FYC panel on June 2 in Los Angeles.
2. The aftermath for Jessica
While many have said Jessica’s story ended in the finale when she told her dad about the rape, Brian feels that her story has actually just started; many times when TV or films feature rapes, they don’t show the aftermath. “It’s covered in three to five episodes, and then you see them move onto a new love interest,” Brian said. “Having spoken to many rape survivors and having many of them close to me…it’s a life-long process, so Jessica’s story is just beginning.” He also added that along with Clay, Jessica has the most healing to do — something we’ll definitely see.
3. New voiceovers
There will still be a voice over in every episode, but this time around, it won’t be Hannah’s. While the team hasn’t yet confirmed if it will be a different voice in every episode, Brian has revealed that a story will still be told from different timelines.
4. Out with cassette tapes, in with…
While there aren’t any other tapes, there is a different medium being used in season two. “There is a different sort of analog technology that plays a hugely important role in season 2,” Brian told EW. “So the cassette tapes aren’t at the center of it — those two boxes of tapes are still hanging around and matter to people — but there will be a new piece of technology for 13-year-olds to Google and try to understand what it was.”
5. Bryce may or may not face punishment.
Let’s be clear: Bryce (Justin Prentice) is the least-redeemable character in season one after partaking in two intense rape scenes — but will he every face the consequences? “[I want to] see somebody punch Bryce in the face,” Brian said, adding that the question of “Will Bryce be brought to justice?” will be answered. I have a feeling Jessica’s dad will have something to do with that.
6. What about Alex?
Overall, season two will be answering a ton of questions that we were all left with on the finale — one being, what happened to Alex? The finale left it up in the air whether or not he would survive a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. “It was interesting to see similarities between Alex and Hannah, because there are a lot of warning signs throughout the season,” actor Miles Heizer told THR. “That’s another subject that’s very rarely shown onscreen and is probably a lot more common than people think it is. People attempting to take their lives and it not happening, I’m sure that will bring a crazy set of issues. It would be interesting to go into that.”
