War Machine has been sentenced to life in prison after sexually assaulting and kidnapping his ex-girlfriend, Christy Mack. The MMA star is eligible for parole in 36 years — when he’s 71 years old.
MMA star War Machine (real name Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver), 35, was sentenced on June 5 to life in prison after being convicted in March 2017 on counts of sexual assault and kidnapping. The enraged fighter attacked his ex-girlfriend, former porn star Christy Mack, after finding her in bed with another man at their Las Vegas home in 2014. War Machine sexually assaulted Christy and beat her viciously, holding her captive for two hours before she could escape and call for help. He’ll be in prison for life, with the possibility of parole in 36 years.
After his sentencing, War Machine addressed the court, expressing his regrets over what he did to Christy. He said he wasn’t “right” in the head, “plain and simple,” and thought about what he did every single day. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t seriously regret all of the things that I did,” War Machine said. “I was a very, very lost and very empty person.”
Christy took the stand during the hearing and that she didn’t know how long of a sentence (the district attorney recommended 32 year to life in prison) would make things “right,” but said that she would fear for her life. “I don’t know if my life will feel complete in 12 years or 30 years and neither do you, but I do know when he gets out he will kill me,” Christy said during the hearing, crying.
During Christy’s two hour, harrowing ordeal, she says that her ex-boyfriend told her, “Now I have to kill you. I’ve gone too far.” Christy told jurors that she was lying in bed, clothed, with her boyfriend Corey Thomas, when War Machine stormed into her bedroom, He beat and raped her, and attacked Corey as well. He was acquitted of two counts of attempted murder for the attack, and also acquitted of burglary with a deadly weapon, sexually motivated coercion and battery with intent to commit sexual assault. Christy was able to escape her ex’s clutches after hours of torture, running through the streets naked, banging on a neighbor’s door for help. Christy suffered a broken nose, lacerated liver, two lost teeth and a fractured rib.
War Machine apologized to Christy in a lengthy statement on Twitter, and said that life in prison was not “too high a price” to answer for what he did. He had the nerve to invite her to visit him in prison, though.
