‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 hasn’t even premiered yet, but we’re all already wondering about the eighth and final season. An HBO exec revealed in a brand-new interview that it could be TWO YEARS until we see the final season. Yes, the last episodes may not air until 2019!
Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss haven’t yet written the final episodes of the hit show or figured out the production schedules for season 8. When HBO programming president Casey Bloys was asked if the final season could air as far away as 2019, he told Entertainment Weekly, “Yeah. They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule. We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.”
Hold up, 2019 is a long way away. The wait for season 7 has been longer than normal, but Game of Thrones fans are not going to be happy if they have to wait two years for the final season! Then again, the showrunners could write and film season 8 in time for a 2018 release. Let’s hope that’s the case. From what we’ve heard and seen of season 7, we’re not going to wait very long for more.
Game of Thrones season 7 will premiere July 16. We’ve seen the trailer and dozens of photos, and Casey teases that this season is as epic as it looks. “I don’t want to oversell, but I can’t imagine anybody being disappointed in this season. It’s amazing.”
Casey also gave us some clarification about those four Game of Thrones prequels in the works. The priority at the moment is Game of Thrones and giving it the proper send-off. The HBO programming president admitted that “the idea is not to do four shows.” The bar has been set so high, Casey just hopes to “get one show that lives up to it.”
