The shocking death of Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell has been ruled a suicide, but the late singer’s family thinks there’s more to this sad story. His wife, Vicky Cornell, thinks that prescription drugs may have caused Chris’s unexpected death and she wants answers!
Chris Cornell, 52, was found dead inside his hotel room shortly after midnight on May 18, following Soundgarden’s show at the Fox Theater in Detroit. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office deemed his cause of death as suicide via hanging, but his family is raising questions about why the “Fell On Black Days” would want to take his own life. “Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris—or if any substances contributed to his demise,” Kirk Pasich, the Attorney for the Cornell family, said in a statement to HollywoodLife.com.
“Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions,” Kirk added, noting that some medical literate indicates Ativan – a tranquilizer and anti-anxiety medication that has also been prescribed as a sleeping aid – can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgment.
Chris’s wife, Vicky Cornell, also said that her husband of 13 years was acting different after the May 17 concert. “When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different. When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him,” she said in the statement. “What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life.”
Vicky also said that Chris showed no signs of depression or suicidal thoughts leading up to his heartbreaking death. “As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband,” Vicky said. “He was my best friend. His world revolved around his family first and of course, his music, second. He flew home for Mother’s Day to spend time with our family.” This incredible show of love for his wife and family right before his death makes Chris’s apparent suicide all that more confusing, and his family will continue to seek answers as to what exactly led to his shocking end.
