The suspect in the horrific car crash in Times Square on May 18 has been identified as Richard Rojas, a 26-year-old New Yorker. Learn more about the out-of-control driver, who’s accused of killing one teenager, and injuring 22 other pedestrians.
1. He has two prior DWIs
Richard Rojas, 26, was previously convicted of two DWIs — driving while intoxicated. It’s unclear when the offenses occurred. The suspect was tested for alcohol after the deadly Times Square crash, which injured 22 pedestrians and killed one, a teenager. He was swiftly arrested after his out-of-control crash. The results of the alcohol test are unknown at this time.
2. He’s from the Bronx
Richard lives in the Bronx, a borough off of upper Manhattan. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was careful to make it clear during a press conference following the crash that Richard’s an American citizen.
3. He allegedly tried to punch a cop
Richard reportedly attempted to escape police while being arrested, trying to sprint away from his smoking and almost overturned car. He was visibly struggling as police officers caught him and dragged him back to a cop car. He even allegedly punched one of them in the face! He reportedly refused to give them a statement after crashing into a pole protecting the pedestrian platform, and allegedly looked intoxicated, according to eyewitnesses.
4. He served in the armed forces
New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill said during his press conference, held about an hour after the chaotic incident, that Richard was a former member of the armed services. It hasn’t been revealed which department he served in.
5. He reportedly drove the wrong way down the street to get to Times Square
Richard reportedly drove for three blocks in the wrong direction on 42nd Street down 7th Avenue. The suspect careened onto Broadway, crashing through a crowd of pedestrians and slamming into a metal pole on 45th Street. He allegedly made no attempt to stop while driving through the crowd.
