Former FOX News CEO, Roger Ailes, is dead at the age of 77, his wife, Elizabeth Ailes, confirmed on May 18. Read her statement here.
“I am profoundly and sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning. Roger was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many,” Elizabeth Ailes said in a statement to the Drudge Report on May 18. “He was also a patriot, profoundly grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise and to give back. During a career that stretched over more than five decades, his work in entertainment, in politics, and in news affected the lives of millions. And so as we mourn his death, we celebrate his life…” Details on Roger’s cause of death have not been revealed.
Roger became the founding CEO of Fox News in October 1996. He held the position until July 2016, when he was fired after sexual harassment allegations against him went public. Gretchen Carlson, who hosted Fox & Friends and The Real Story With Gretchen Carlson under Roger, first made her accusations against Roger on July 6, 2016, claiming that he sexually harassed her repeatedly and wrongfully terminated her from the network.
Megyn Kelly also came forward with shocking claims against Roger a few weeks later, alleging he made sexual advances toward her, as well. Several more people have since come forward, and on July 21, 2016, Roger resigned from Fox News, receiving $40 million in an exit agreement. In her book, which came out in November 2016, Megyn detailed the alleged sexual abuse, which included Roger allegedly making sexual remarks toward her and trying to kiss her several times. She said this ended in 2006.
Roger, who has been divorced twice, married Elizabeth in 1998. He attended Ohio University and received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1962. After working in television in Cleveland and Philadelphia, Roger began doing political consulting, working on campaigns for Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and advising George W. Bush during 9/11 before helping start Fox News.
