‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans may have anticipated [SPOILER]’s heartbreaking exit from the series, but it didn’t make his or her departure in the May 18 season finale any easier to watch. And now, series creator Shonda Rhimes is saying she was ‘sad to see’ this person ‘leave.’ Us, too.
Another season, another Grey’s Anatomy exit. As longtime fans of this series, we know to expect heartbreaking exits as each season comes and goes. But as we said before, they don’t get any easier for us as viewers. Fortunately, series creator Shonda Rhimes released a beautiful statement on Jerrika Hinton‘s departure, which eases our hearts… just a little bit.
“Actors evolve differently and when an actor like Jerrika comes to me and says she wants to try something new creatively, I like to honor that,” Rhimes says in a statement via HollywoodLife.com‘s sister site, TVLine. “Jerrika has shared so much of herself with Stephanie and I am incredibly proud of the journey we’ve taken together. While I’m sad to see Stephanie leave Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, I am excited to see what’s next for Jerrika.” Jerrika asked to be let out of her contract after she landed a starring role in Alan Ball‘s new series, Here, Now, and fortunately, Shonda approved. As we previously told you, Jerrika’s Stephanie quit Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital at the close of Season 13, after suffering traumatic burns from a fire in the building.
Jerrika also told TVLine, “My exit has been something that [series creator] Shonda [Rhimes] and I have talked about for almost a year now, so there were no surprises.” And when asked if she’d ever return to the series in maybe a year or two, she replied, “I would say, after the way the episode ends, it would be very difficult for Stephanie to practice medicine again in the way that she had become accustomed to. Personally, I’m just glad she gets to leave having made her mark.”
