Audra McDonald spoke to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY on the Variety Power of Women red carpet, and dished on a potential ‘Beauty and the Beast’ prequel. Would she be willing to return as Garderobe for a new film? Watch our interview to hear her answer!
“If there’s a prequel hell yes I want to be involved! It’s a dream come true to do a Disney film,” Audra McDonald, 46, told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “It’s everything you think it would be. As amazing as it is being at Disneyland for a day, or Disney World, it’s the same thing being in a Disney film.”
Okay, we’re so stoked for a Beauty and the Beast prequel right now! So Audra, who played Madame Garderobe, is on board — what about the rest of the cast? We’re dying to know who would be involved if this movie were to really happen. The premise of a prequel, rather than a sequel seems a little strange, but Disney could make it work, and the company’s president of production, Sean Bailey, told our sister site Deadline in March that they’re exploring that option for the future. Amazing!
Maybe it would be about the Beast’s life in the castle with his loyal servants before the drama goes down. There was a lot to dissect about his past that they never got to in the current movie, or the animated original. Like, where the hell are his parents, the king and queen? Why don’t we ever hear his name once in the film? And how terrible was he in his human life, besides that one incident at the ball, that the enchantress thought she needed to teach him a lesson? We need answers! A prequel could also delve into Belle’s (Emma Watson) past, as well as the townspeople. We know that Gaston (Luke Evans) fought in the French Revolution, and that Maurice (Kevin Kline) has a reputation for being crazy. It would be so fascinating!
The original animated movie did get a spinoff, a 1997 straight-to-video film called Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas. The “Something More” sequence was basically expanded into a look into Belle’s entire winter with the Beast. It’s a total classic, guys. What’s the chance that we could see that happen in live action? Fingers crossed for any project involving Beauty and the Beast!
