If you’re spending money on a hair appointment, it’s crucial that you ask your hair stylist the right questions so you get the most out of your session and so you feel and look your best. Dana Caschetta, National Trainer for Eufora International and stylist at Ammon Carver Studio in NYC, suggested that you ask these 10 important questions the next time you’re in the chair:
1. What is the overall health of my hair and scalp?
“On a scale of 1 – 5, have your stylist rate your hair and scalp. Your stylist can recommend treatments and products to help get your hair back in shape if it’s in a poor condition.”
2. How can we customize my haircut to best suit my face shape?
“Bringing in photos of a haircut are great to give your stylist an idea of what you are looking for, but asking for customization is key. The little details of the fringe or face framing can be tailored to an individual’s face shape.”
3. Which hair color tones look best with my eye color?
“I like to look deeper into my guest’s eye color, sometimes I find the tiniest spec of yellow or deep blue within the iris of someone’s eye and can add some complementary tones to make it pop.”
4. What hair color complements my skin tone best for this season?
“Ask for a complementing hair color for your skin tone, but to be mindful of the upcoming season and if your skin will darken or warm up. Same goes with heading into winter when your skin naturally gets lighter.”
5. How often should I be shampooing?
“Most people know their stylist does not recommend shampooing every day. Some people with coarse hair can go a few extra days longer than someone with fine hair so be sure to get a professional recommendation.”
6. What is the base of your shampoo and conditioner?
“It’s important to know what is being used on your hair when you’re in the salon. Many shampoos and conditioners are based in water. Water will dilute any good ingredients that may be in the product, but can also dry out your scalp.”
7. What are ways to make my hair thicker and fuller?
“If your hair is in need of fullness adjusting the haircut can help or your stylist can recommend volumizing products.”
8. What is your professional recommendation for home care?
“Taking care of your style or hair color at home is crucial to the longevity and over-all maintenance of your look. Being specific with at home regimen from shampoo to styling and finishing products can make all the difference.”
9. What styling tools will I need to duplicate this look?
“Be sure to ask about what size round brush or what type of bristles you should use for your hair type. Don’t forget to ask about hot tools too.”
10. When should I schedule my next appointment to maintain this look?
“Knowing ahead of time how frequent you will need to be back at the salon is important. Your look should to be conducive with your lifestyle, schedule, and budget. Opening this discussions about how often you want to come in (ideally) and the time you have at home to style will allow your stylist to make adjustments to your color and haircut to work within your needs.”
