So. Awkward. The timing of this photo couldn’t be any more embarrassing. Just hours before Bill O’Reilly was fired by Fox News amid sexual harassment allegations on Wednesday, April 19, he was shaking hands with the holiest person in the world — The Pope!
Bill O’Reilly, 67, had a pretty interesting day today, April 19, if you ask us. Just hours after shaking hands with Pope Francis, he was fired from Fox News amid sexual harassment allegations. Talk about going from an extreme high to an extreme low!
Bill, who has been on vacation in Italy for the past week, sat in a V.I.P. section and shook hands with The Pope, according to The New York Times.
Interestingly, the Vatican told The New York Times that Bill O’Reilly was not scheduled to meet with The Pope this week, however, in order to shake hands with him at the large weekly event, which is open to the public, one must obtain a special ticket to sit in the exclusive V.I.P. section.
Anyway, the encounter now seems pretty awkward, as it came just hours before 21st Century Fox announced that Bill O’Reilly had been forced out of his position after advertisers pulled out of his highly-rated program, following assault accusations.
On April 1, five women came forward and accused him of harassment over the past 15 years — they told The New York Times that their lawsuits were covered up by Fox, and the payouts allegedly totaled about $13 million. Protests soon followed, and then advertisers pulled out from supporting The O’Reilly Factor. Finally, Bill was let go from Fox on April 19. In a statement, 21st Century Fox said, “After a thorough and careful review of the allegations, the Company and Bill O’Reilly have agreed that Bill O’Reilly will not be returning to the Fox News Channel.”
