As if April The Giraffe’s little baby boy isn’t cute enough as it is, the spotted calf has a bubbly personality and enjoys ‘prancing’ around his mommy. Animal Adventure Park’s Jordan Patch spoke to HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY about the darling 5’9″ giraffe that has captured the hearts of millions worldwide. Read here for all the details!
April The Giraffe’s bundle of joy is less than a week old and is already showing off his ridiculously cute personality! “Our little guy is very outgoing and independent. He enjoys prancing around his mother,” Animal Adventure Park‘s Jordan Patch explains. “We have a big, bold personality here. Young calves tend to be outgoing, however Baby is extremely outgoing.” For the time being, Patch says April’s munchkin will be referred to as Baby, until an official name is selected.
In addition to having a fun personality, Baby, who was born on Saturday morning, April 15, is already nibbling at the hay feeder. “He is nibbling, which is different from eating. He naturally nibbles when he’s nursing. But the fact that he is already nibbling on hay is way ahead of time,” Patch says. “He won’t start eating solids for a couple months. Baby will continue to nurse for 6-10 months and up to 14-15 months.”
If your’e watching the cam and don’t see Baby, don’t be alarmed, says Patch. “He’s most likely taking a nap in the corner, under the camera.” You’ll be surprised to learn that giraffes only sleep at most two hours a day! “Baby sleeps about 5-8 hours a day. This will change though. When he gets older, he will sleep about two hours a day. A giraffe’s sleep cycle is throughout the day and made up of short naps – lasting no longer than 5 minutes each,” Jordan explains. “The reason being they are vulnerable to predators and must stay alert.”
And if your’e wondering if mommy and baby have cuddle time, they don’t! April and Baby don’t snuggle. “They actually sleep on opposite sides of the pen,” the park owner explains. “This is because if April wakes up, she doesn’t want to accidentally step on Baby when getting up.”
No need to worry about a lack of baby name ideas. Patch says they have already received tens of thousands of possible baby names. You too can pick a name by going to http://NameAprilsCalf.com. It costs only $1 to participate in the naming process with all proceeds going to their fabulous facility, giraffe conservation and a foundation Jordan and his wife started for Eva, their 15-month-old daughter, who has who has a rare form of epilepsy.
Remember you have until this Friday, April 21, to watch April, Baby and Oliver to your heart’s content. After that, the cam will no longer be on 24/7. “We simply have to get back to work. Animal Adventure Park is opening in May and we have lots to do,” Patch says. “We will let fans know on Facebook when we will have the cam back on April and family.”
