Dieting and losing weight can be really hard, but little things make a big difference. Tiny swaps of just 100 calories can help you shed weight in just a week. For example, swapping a margarita for a glass of wine saves you hundreds of calories, and is much lower in carbs and sugar.
I’ve been doing Weight Watchers for 11 weeks and I’ve lost 13.2 pounds! Thanks, Oprah! It’s all about making the right choices, but not depriving yourself.
The program assigns a point value to all foods, and rewards healthy choices like lean proteins, vegetables, and fruit. I get 30 points per day, and 35 bonus points for the week. It becomes a sort of game to stay under your point values, so here are some easy swaps I’ve made to save points and shed pounds.
You can follow these swaps, even if you aren’t doing Weight Watchers.
SWAP PEANUT BUTTER FOR PB2 — The dehydrated peanut powder has 85 percent less fat and calories than traditional peanut butter. Just mix with water and drizzle over a green apple for a satisfying snack. If you’re doing Weight Watchers, traditional peanut butter is 6 points, while PB2 is 1 point.
SWAP CHIPS FOR SKINNYPOP POPCORN — If you want something crunchy for snacking, try swapping chips for SkinnyPop popcorn. They have super yummy flavors like Dusted Dark Chocolate, Sea Salt & Pepper, and White Cheddar. Chips can be 5-7 points for a single serving bag, while SkinnyPop only has 3 points per bag.
SWAP BANANA BREAD FOR OVERNIGHT OATS — Instead of a carb-heavy, sugary breakfast like a danish, bagel or banana bread, try overnight oats. It literally takes just a few minutes to make — soak rolled oats in almond milk and top with crushed walnuts and bananas. Leave in the fridge overnight to grab and go in the morning! You can save 3 or 4 points with this swap.
SWAP 2% MILK FOR VANILLA ALMOND MILK — 2 % milk has 5 points per cup, while almond milk only has 1 point. You’ll never notice the difference!
SWAP EGGS FOR EGG WHITES — I love the nutrition of an egg, but on Weight Watchers, whole eggs have 2 points each while 3 egg whites have only 1 point. I like to mix one egg and three egg whites for a super filling breakfast.
SWAP PASTA FOR SPAGHETTI SQUASH — You can cook spaghetti squash in the microwave for an easy, nutritious dinner. Fork through the squash to make “pasta” and cover with turkey or beef bolognese. Squash has ZERO POINTS, and pasta has around 4-6 points for only 2 ounces!
SWAP PASTA SAUCE FOR CANNED TOMATOES — Most pasta sauce in the jar has 3 points per 1/2 cup and a lot of extra sugar. Use canned, crushed or diced tomatoes and italian spices for a ZERO point sauce!
SWAP REGULAR ICE CREAM FOR ENLIGHTENED: I love Haagen-Dazs (who doesn’t) but one-half cup of most flavors has 12 points! 12!!! Protein and fiber-packed Enlightened has only 3 points for the same serving size. You could literally eat the whole pint vs. 1/4 of the Haagen-Dazs! I’ve had the Enlightened Birthday Cake flavor and it was delish!
SWAP A MARGARITA FOR WINE OR VODKA — The best part of WW is that you don’t need to give up complete food groups. You can still have alcohol, but choosing wine (4 points) or vodka (3 points) over a margarita (11-17 points depending on the size and mix) will save you a ton of points!
