The parents in ‘Riverdale’ are even more complex than the kids, and Hermione Lodge is at the head of all the drama. HollywoodLife.com spoke with Veronica’s mom ahead of this week’s episode.
In last week’s Riverdale, Fred’s (Luke Perry) business and workers were getting attacked — and we found out that it was actually an order from Hiram Lodge; he found out his estranged wife, Hermione (Marisol Nichols) was dating Fred, and was not happy. So, now what? Well, that’s what Marisol, 43, told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY.
So Hiram knows about Fred and Hermione. Now what?
He is dangerous. What we’ve seen so far is Hermione acting independently of Hiram. She’s like, “Who cares? He’s in prison! I’m gonna do what I wanna do, I’m gonna live my life how I wanna!” This is a very unfortunate wake up call; she notices, “You’re still married to this guy and it doesn’t work that way.” You’re going to see that more and you’ll see how she’s gonna have to turn and change things.
What can you tell us about how it’ll affect the relationship with Veronica?
We’re gonna see [their relationship] go back and forth, it’s a rocky area. Hermione is making decisions that are in Veronica’s best interest, she just doesn’t know it, and so that’s always gonna create conflict.
We can see Veronica has a meltdown this week. What’s that about?
I think Hermione’s been in denial about who Hiram really is and what he’s capable of, and at some point, like anyone who’s in denial, they come face to face with reality, and that’s a lot to swallow. That is what you see — her basically waking up.
A chance we’ll meet Hiram?
There is for sure, I just can’t say when.
What can you say about Hermione/Fred’s romance, will it keep growing?
I love them. I really do. But Fred’s married, and we’re gonna see Molly Ringwald coming in. It’s almost destined to not work, which sucks, between Hiram and Mary and all of that. I’m a romantic at heart, so I’ve always gotta believe that it’s gonna work out. Maybe they’ll be endgame, we’ll see.
Hermione’s such a strong woman — it must be nice to play.
It’s so amazing, and I’m looking forward to doing it more. You’re gonna see more of Hermione’s strengths. You’ve seen a lot of her vulnerability so far. As the season goes on, you’ll see more and more of her strengths and what she’s had to do — she has to do again. It’s really important. It’s always important to me for there to be strong women roles. I think it’s changing, I really do. We need role models, strong role models out there.
Hopes for Hermione in future seasons?
I want to see her butt heads with Alice a little bit more! Hermione’s been nice so far, but if Alice continues to be how she’s been, I’m happy to see them go head-to-head. Most importantly, I want to see her have it out with her husband. I think he’s put them through a lot. She’s had his back so much, and you’ll see it even more as the show goes on. I want her to stand up to him! Their relationship is very much House of Cards. I want to see that.
I’m hoping to see what happened with Alice and Hermione back in the day.
I want that! I have been pitching an ’80s flashback! We have to do it — Alice has to have pigtails and braces, Hermione has to have the IZOD with the collar put up, all that stuff. Luke Perry can just be Luke Perry! I’m 100 percent trying to make that happen.
Riverdale airs every Thursday on The CW at 9PM ET.
