‘Designated Survivor’ season 1 is in full swing, and HollywoodLife.com got the EXCLUSIVE scoop from star Italia Ricci about what’s ahead. From more complications in Tom’s first 100 days to Emily adjusting to her new role, the rest of season 1 is going to be ‘crazy!’
HollywoodLife.com talked EXCLUSIVELY with Italia Ricci, 30, at the top of the Empire State Building on April 5.
Tom is in the midst of his first 100 days, and he encountered some struggles in last night’s episode, what can you say about the complications ahead?
Italia Ricci: He’s always going to face some sort of problem he needs to get through because that’s the nature of television. That’s what’s going to keep it interesting. I just think the stakes get higher and higher for the decisions that he has to make and how it’s going to effect the people around him and sort of the cascading of every choice he makes and everything he passes and everything he chooses to keep a secret. Everything starts to boil over after the episode on all fronts — Hannah’s story and the family’s story. Everything just starts bubbling.
Emily is the new acting Chief of Staff and that’s a lot of pressure. Is she going to be struggling with her new role?
I think she feels like perhaps it’s a bigger role than maybe she’s probably equipped to play, but she’s stepping up because that’s what she does. She’s always been sort of the bulldog, and she’s not giving up now. She wants to support Tom, and she truly believes in him. I hope she’s not the traitor!
Are Tom and Emily going to clash at all in the coming episodes?
She will disagree with him. I think at more than one point. You will see her speaking up a little bit more than she’s been able to because she’s feeling out what her role is in the White House and what place she’s at. It used to just be her and him, and now she’s got to let him listen to all these other people. You get to see how she develops that confidence now that she’s acting Chief of Staff.
Aaron has a new position with the Speaker of the House — is that going to impact Emily?
Yes. They’ve sort of always been at odds within the same office and now being in an office that are odds it kind of flips the energy to maybe, like, ‘Oh, we’ve kind of always wanted to be against each other and now we actually are. What do we do about it now?’
Aaron and Emily shared a kiss a few episodes ago, is there hope for them romantically?
The energy doesn’t go away. There will continue to be tension.
How would you describe these episodes leading up to the finale?
Crazy. Like, things really start happening and I read them have to take a break because something happens and I’m like, ‘Oh my god. Nobody is safe.'”
Designated Survivor airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
