He’s known as both the hunky bae of Paulina Gretzky and the best golfer in the world. Yet, what Dustin Johnson would love to be known as a Masters champion, so get know about the pro going for the green blazer at the 2017 event.
1. He’s the favorite to win the 2017 Masters.
Though he’s currently the No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, Dustin Johnson, 30, has never won the Masters Tournament. The closest he’s come is a Top 4 finish in 2016. The 2016 U.S. Open winner is a safe bet to claim the ceremonial green jacket awarded to the champion, according to ESPN. He’s ahead of Jordan Spieth, 23, and Rory McIlroy, 27, the other two top contenders.
2. Dustin once took a break from golf to seek “professional help.”
Dustin’s ascent to the top of the golf world comes after a very dark fall. In 2014, Dustin stepped away from Golf to take a “leave of absence” to “seek professional help for challenges I have faced,” according to Golf magazine. It was around that time that Dustin allegedly failed a drug test for a third time, with sources telling Golf magazine that he allegedly tested positive for cocaine. The report claimed that Dustin was under a six-month suspension, but PGA Tour officials told the magazine that his leave from golf was voluntary.
3. He’s been the center of more than one scandal.
That wasn’t the only major accusation dropped in that 2014 Golf report, according to Deadspin, as the magazine claimed that Dustin allegedly had “a sexual indiscretion with one wife of a PGA Tour Player.” These claims were “not a huge secret,” according to Fox Sports’ Robert Lusetich, who tweeted a claim that Dustin “had affairs with two wives…one broke up the marriage.”
4. 2016 was a major comeback year.
Dustin returned to the PGA tour in 2015, but his big year was in 2016. Though he turned down the chance to play at the 2016 Summer Olympics, he won the 2016 PGA Player of the Year, the Vardon Trophy and the Byron Nelson Award. He also ended the season as the PGA Tour leading money winner.
5. His girlfriend’s mom set them up.
Dustin is engaged to Paulina Gretzky, 28, the daughter of Wayne Gretzky, 56. The two met courtesy of Janet Jones, 56, who played with Dustin in a tournament held by Tiger Woods, 41. “She told Dustin about her daughter, blah-blah-blah, and invited him to the house that night,” Paulina said, per the New York Post.
“So I show up looking like a complete ragamuffin, and here’s this really cute guy. I didn’t stay long, but he was such a gentleman, so endearing.” Clearly, Dustin hit a hole in one when it comes to love, as the couple is expecting their second child together!
