Ouch! Dustin Johnson, top ranked golfer, has taken a nasty spill down the stairs of his rental property in Augusta, Georgia and has injured his lower back on Wed. Apr. 5th, the eve of the Masters. Keep reading to learn more about the injury and whether or not he will compete.
“He landed very hard on his lower back and is now resting, although quite uncomfortably. He has been advised to remain immobile and begin a regimen of anti-inflammatory medication and icing, with the hope of being able to play tomorrow,” stated David Winkle, the manager for Dustin Johnson, 32, in an email to ESPN. Dustin is going to get a few extra hours of healing and therapy come Thursday, Apr. 6th because he is not scheduled to tee off until later in the afternoon, at 2:03pm. If Dustin can make it to the box, he will be in the final group which includes two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson, 38, and PGA champion Jimmy Walker, 38.
This is terrible news for the young man from Columbia, South Carolina who is ranked #1 in the world of golf heading into the biggest major tournament of the season. Dustin has been on a healthy run heading into the Masters winning three straight tournaments to help his ascension to the top spot in golf. As a result of the fall, Dustin will be missing an event Wednesday night where the Golf Writers Association of America was scheduled to honor him with 2016 player of the year award according to the report by ESPN.
Update: Dustin has withdrawn from the Masters, according to ESPN. After his warm-up, he arrived at the first tee. However, before his scheduled tee-time, Dustin turned around and returned to the clubhouse. It seems that the injury was too much for him to overcome.
Dustin is hoping to bring home his second Major title, if he is back recovers in time to tee-off on Thursday. His only major win was in 2016 when Dustin finished at the top of the leader board in the U.S. Open. We wish Dustin a speedy recovery and hope he is well enough to make it into the tournament.
