It’s another week of thrilling La Liga action and Real Madrid remains on top of the table. Los Blancos look to keep their lead intact when they play Alaves on April 2. Don’t miss out when this game kicks off at 10:15 AM ET.
Real Madrid shouldn’t overestimate Deportivo Alaves because the last thing Los Blancos need is an upset. Barcelona is just two points behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s crew. If the 32-year-old FIFA Player of the Year doesn’t lead his crew to victory, Lionel Messi, 29, and his squad will easily pounce to take the lead away.
It’s possible Ronaldo may not get that much action in this match. It’s the first game after the international break (aka the World Cup qualifiers.) In the next 30 days, Real Madrid will play in nine matches, including a pair of Champions League quarterfinal games with Bayern Munich. If that wasn’t enough pressure, Real meets Barca for an El Clasico. That April 23 match could very well determine who wins La Liga this season.
Before they get there, Real has to deal with Alaves. This is the team that will meet Barca for the Copa del Rey finals on May 27, and the Babazoros have scored wins against Barca and Villarreal while on the road, per Goal.com. Alaves also have played Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao to a draw. A draw could doom Real Madrid, as Barca plays last-place Granada this week in La Liga. If Real Madrid walks out of this match with no points while Barcelona wins, there goes Los Blancos’ lead.
Any distraction could cost Real Madrid the whole La Liga season, so now is not the time for the club to be dealing with a lineup shakeup. Sadly, they have to deal with it whether they like it or not, as James Rodriguez, 25, is set to exit the team, according to The Independent. Coach Zinedine Zidane, 44, has reportedly lost faith in James’s ability to work well with the squad, playing him in only 33% of the games so far. The problem is they will try to recoup the €80m transfer fee they paid to get him from Monaco. Perhaps they’ll play him in this game as a way to entice a club to shell out the cash?
