Wait, did Barcelona just do that? How did they do that?! Lionel Messi’s team pulled off a comeback for the ages on March 8, beating Paris Saint-Germain while also scoring enough points to ensure they advance to the next round of the Champions League!
Forget the New England Patriots comeback over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl 51. This is even more unreal. Everyone had written Barcelona off after they lost to Paris Saint-Germain on Feb. 14. The 0-4 defeat in the first leg of the Round of 16 meant that Barca needed to score at least 5 points in the second leg on March 8, all while keeping PSG – one of the best squads in the world – scoreless. Advancing to the quarterfinals seemed practically impossible.
Well, pulling off the impossible is what Lionel Messi, 29, Neymar, 24, Sergi Roberto, 25, and the rest of the Blaugrana do best! After 95 minutes of play, the final whistle was blown and the score was 6-1, with Barcelona scoring enough points to advance to the next stage of the tournament!
No team has ever come back from a four-goal deficit to advance to the next round, according to The Guardian, but Barcelona just did it. When the game started, Barcelona knew it needed to go hard – and they went hard!
Luis Suarez, 29, kicked off this history-making comeback two minutes into the game, securing the first goal. Andres Iniesta, 32, put Barca up 2-0 at minute 42, though he had help from PSG’s Layvin Kurzawa, 24. After Andres took a shot at the goal, Layvin accidently scored on his own team, keeping Barca’s momentum alive.
Messi scored at the 50 minute, after a penalty was called over a crash between Neymar and Thomas Meunier, 25. With Barca up 3-0 (4-3 on aggregate) Blaugrana fans were on edge – only to suffer a near heart attack when Edinson Cavani, 30, scored for PSG. That made Barcelona’s task so much harder. If Barcelona scored five goals, they would tie PSG on aggregate, 5-5. However, PSG would win the tiebreaker since they scored an away goal at Barca’s field.
It was as if the game was over. Now, Barca needed to score three more goals before the game ended. Somehow, they did that! It wouldn’t be until the 87 th minute until Blaugrana scored again, with Neymar nailing in a free kick. The Brazilian superstar would score again two minutes later, converting a penalty to tie the teams 5-5 on aggregate. With the time clicking away, Sergi would become the hero of Barcelona, tapping in a free kick from Neymar to prevent elimination!
Un. Be. Lievable. This win puts Barcelona yet again into the history books, as they staved off elimination. After pulling off this miracle, is there any team that could possibly prevent Barca from winning the championship?
Are you amazed that Barcelona was able to pull this comeback off, HollywoodLifers? Do you think they’ll win the Champions League?
