Soccer fans better get used to saying the name ‘Miguel Almiron,’ because he’s poised to become a huge star! The young player is making his debut with the Atlanta United during the 2017 MLS season, so get to know all about this potential superstar!
1. He’s one of the most expensive players in MLS history.
Miguel Almiron is only 23 years old, but the Paraguayan player is already worth millions of dollars. The Atlanta United decided to drop some major cash to acquire Miguel from Argentina’s Club Lanus, reportedly costing the MLS squad $8.5 million in transfer fees, according to Sports Illustrated.
“Our club’s ambition is to acquire quality players heading into their peak playing years, and Miguel’s youth and ability absolutely speak to that,” Atlanta United president Darren Eale said. “He’s highly regarded as one of the top young players in South America and we couldn’t be happier that he has chosen to continue his already impressive career here in Atlanta.”
2. Miguel has played in both Paraguay and Argentina.
Like many soccer stars, Miguel began his career as a young boy. He played with Club Nacional as a 14-year-old, before signing a contract with Cerro Porteno in 2013, the same year they won the Primera Division title. During 39 appearances with the club, he scored 6 goals. In 2015, he was transferred to Lanus in the Argentine Primera Division. During 44 appearances with the club during the 2015-16 season, he made 5 goals, which caught the eye of some major clubs.
3. He almost ended up in England.
After starting against the United States in the Copa America Centenario, Miguel drew the attention of Arsenal and Chelsea of England’s Premier League, according to Four Four Two, but Atlanta wanted the young attacking-midfielder for their squad.
4. His boss is one of his biggest fans.
“Miguel is a player I’ve long admired,” Gerardo “Tata” Martino, 54, former Argentine player (and former coach of Barcelona) said when Atlanta signed the young man. “He is a very skillful player with excellent technique and great vision. He is currently one of the best players in Argentina’s top league and we’re really excited that he’s joining Atlanta United.”
5. He’s expected to be a huge star.
There’s a lot of hype surrounding Almiron, but Atlanta’s ready to go big in 2017. This will be the expansion team’s debut season with MLS, and they’ve already sold 25,000 season tickets, according to Fox Sports. Along with Hector Villaba, 22, Brandon Vazquez, 18, and 16-year-old Andrew Carleton, Miguel is poised to be the next big thing in US Soccer. Atlanta United plays the New York Red Bulls on March 5 at 7:40 PM. Don’t miss it!
