Hold onto your hat, Lance Bass! Two people are just one year away from taking the most EPIC vacation ever — to the moon! SpaceX announced on Feb. 27 that a couple of tourists have paid and arm and a leg for a leisure trip into outer space. Here’s the scoop!
You know that famous line in The Honeymooners when Ralph says “to the moon, Alice?” Well now, you can take that literally. That’s because SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Feb. 27 that two people have already placed a down payment on a tourism trip around the moon, and you won’t believe how soon it’s happening!
In 2018, two people will officially take the first American leisure trip into outer space to get an unbeatable view of the moon! “Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration,” Elon explained. The trip will take about a week. Sure beats Hawaii!
And like astronauts before them, these people will have to prepare. Elon reveals that later in 2017, they will start taking fitness tests and begin training. They will take off from the famous launch pad near Cape Canaveral, Florida, much like Apollo. Shockingly, humans haven’t gone this far since 1972, so it’s wild to think the next trip will be simple tourists going for fun, rather than for science.
SpaceX plans to keep doing trips like this as long as the first one goes well. Elon claims that there are more people lined up for future trips, but no names have been announced. While this seems like a crazy futuristic sci-fi movie, it’s actually not the first time tourists have ended up in space. Russia took people to the International Space Station. However, Elon is relying on spaceships that aren’t even been tested yet, so this year will be important for making the 2018 flight possible!
