Whoops! During his acceptance speech at the 2017 Oscars, Casey Affleck admitted to the audience that he wished he had something ‘meaningful’ to say. Well, turns out he DID — he just forgot to say it! And now the actor is totally feeling the repercussions! You’ll never believe what he forgot to mention.
While accepting his Oscar for Best Actor at the 2017 Academy Awards on Feb. 26, Casey Affleck, 41, made a pretty epic mistake when he forgot to mention his very own kids — yikes! And the oversight is apparently gnawing at him SO much that he fears he “failed” as a parent. “My head was completely blank,” Casey admitted backstage at the award show in the Oscar press room. “The shock of winning the award and the terror of having a microphone in front of you and all of those faces staring at you.”
And Casey’s shock certainly seemed to get the best of him. “I didn’t thank my children, which is something that I’ll probably never ever live down,” the Oscar-winner continued. “About three seconds after I made it backstage, my phone rang and my son said, ‘You didn’t even mention us.’ And my heart just sank.” Yikes! Casey added, “So, you know, that probably would have been the most meaningful thing I could have said, and I failed.”
But at the same time, Kenneth Lonergan, who won the Oscar for Original Screenplay for Manchester by the Sea, chimed in that he DID mention his child, and she was not actually happy about it! “My daughter who is 15 was extremely irritated that I mentioned her at all. So you can’t really win,” he said. Casey and his ex Summer Phoenix, 38, share two kids: son Atticus, 9, and daughter Indiana, 12.
And while he regrettably left them out during his big moment, Casey DID thank his parents, brother Ben Affleck, 44, co-producer Matt Damon, 46, Kenneth, as well as his friends and fellow nominee Denzel Washington, 62. As his younger brother spoke, Ben got teary-eyed, which Casey reflected on post-speech. “I wasn’t sure if he was just…I saw those tears and I thought maybe I’m just not making a good speech and he was really disappointed,” Casey said. “But I think he was probably touched, and I think that we are — I mean, not to brag or anything, but I think we’re the only two brothers to win Academy Awards, ever.” Aw!
Tell us, HollywoodLifers — can you blame Casey for forgetting to mention his kids during his whirlwind-of-a-moment?
