You definitely won’t see this one coming. On the latest episode of ‘The Walking Dead’, we watch as Negan brings Eugene into his home — the Sanctuary — and teaches him an entirely new way of life.
As we return to The Sanctuary, the new episode opens with the previously released preview of Dwight (Austin Amelio) finding Fat Joey’s body and discovering that Daryl (Norman Reedus) has escaped. At the same time this is happening, Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and his men are returning from Alexandria with their new hostage, Eugene (Josh McDermitt). We are watching to different moments unfold at the same time. Eugene thinks he’s about to get killed when instead he’s given a warm welcome as well as the quaint little room Daryl used to look at longingly while living in a pitch black cell. At the same time we are watching Dwight follow Daryl’s trail, finding the mess he left in the room he was hiding in as well as the “go now” note that was left for him.
While Eugene orders lunch (pasta and orange-y sauce) and gets accustomed to his new digs, including a fully stocked fridge, Dwight gets a knock at the door. He hesitates to open it and we find out why when a bunch of Negan’s thugs bust it down and jump him without any warning. Of course, Negan is watching from the doorway with Lucille resting over his shoulder.
Next up we see Dwight sitting in a pitch black cell much like the one Daryl was kept in, if not the exact room. Negan comes knocking and from the other side of the door he reveals that Sherry (Christine Evangelista) is also missing. Negan accuses Dwight of letting Daryl out, but when he asks Dwight who he is his response is still Negan. So Negan lets him out of the room, tells the doctor to stitch him up, then tells Dwight to go find Sherry and bring her back. As for Daryl? Negan believes he either went home or is coming back to kill them, so he’s confident they’ll catch him either way.
After Dwight leaves, Eugene gets a tour of the Sanctuary and where the workers make things for the Saviors. The women giving the tour — who calls him “haircut”, by the way — teaches him how to use the points system and tells him he’s “one of” them now and can take whatever he wants whenever he wants. Then she leads him to Negan who picks his brain about what he knows and how he knows it. Eugene explains how he can make bullets and why he’s so smart (aka the same lies he told Abraham), which brings Negan to giving him a new nickname: Doctor Smartypants. To prove how smart he is, Negan asks for help keeping his army of fence walkers from falling apart (literally), and Eugene delivers. In a matter of moments he comes up with the brilliant plan of melting down metal and covering the walkers in it to keep their bodies from getting all torn up, even adding a bonus tip of making sure to cover their heads, too, so that they can’t be killed. Negan loves this and immediately takes a liking to Eugene, even offering up the company of some of his wives for the evening. The catch? No sex.
Sherry Leaves Dwight A Devastating Letter
During Eugene’s date night with three of Negan’s wives, one of them gets a little touchy-feely and offers him a massage. Although he hesitates, Eugene lets them know that he knows they are not there on their own accord and instead he wants to show them a fun time… which he thinks he’s doing by playing video games as they watch. Somehow the conversation leads to how smart Eugene is and one of the wives jokes that he could make a bomb out of household products. Next we see Eugene outside with the wives and a crate of supplies, and the wives are asking him to show them some “cool shit.” Eugene delivers by causing a foam explosion and then blowing up two hydrogen balloons he made. This delights the women in a way Eugene is obviously not used to, which is kind of hilarious to watch.
Meanwhile, Dwight is out on the road looking for Sherry. His first stop is an old house that has been destroyed by the apocalypse and time, but inside he finds a dirty old picture of himself with Sherry, his wife, in much better times. We hear Sherry’s voice over him reading a letter in which she reminds him that they had plans to meet at the house if they ever got separated. As she’s talking Dwight finds a post-it note from Sherry reminding him to feed the goldfish, and he holds it up the “go now” note that was left for Daryl. The handwriting is identical, which confirms both our and Dwight’s suspicions: she let Daryl go. He keeps looking throughout the house and finds the letter from Sherry we are hearing her read, as well as her wedding and engagement rings. In the letter she says she would wait for him now except she doesn’t know if he would actually run away with her or if he would take her back to Negan or, even worse, just kill him herself.
Dwight is devastated by this letter. He starts tearing furniture apart and then crumbles to the floor overwhelmed by his own emotion, all the while Sherry’s voice is reading more of the note. She tells him she let Daryl go because she knows it reminded Dwight of who he “used to be”, and that she wanted him to be able to forget. In closing, Sherry tells him that she hopes he gets out, too, and that he was wrong about being in the Sanctuary being better than being dead. Before leaving the house, Dwight packs away Sherry’s rings in an old cigarette packet where he kept his own, then leaves behind a bag of pretzels and a case of beer.
Eugene Becomes Exactly Who Negan Wants Him To Be
Back at the Sanctuary, Tanya and Frankie (two of Negan’s wives) return to Eugene’s room asking for help. They tell him that they signed up to be Negan’s wives, but that Amber did it for her mom who needed medicine at the time. They also tell him that all Amber does is drink and cry, In short, Amber wants to die and they want him to make something for her to take so she will die in her sleep. Eugene tries to turn them down but they appeal to him with some sweet talk about him being a “good” man, and finally he caves. Next we see him name-drop Negan to a woman in the worker area just to get some cold capsules, and when it works he takes total advantage and takes a bunch of her stuff before leaving. Back in his room he creates whatever it is he needs to to help Amber take her own life, if that’s what these pills are really for, like a mad scientist.
When Dwight returns to the Sanctuary he tells the doctor that he killed Sherry. We find out just moments later that it’s a trap, when Negan calls a meeting near the fire pit and starts beating the doctor with Lucille. Dwight planted the end of Sherry’s note (the part that said “Goodbye, Honey”) in the doctor’s desk, and now Negan believes that the man let Daryl out to make Sherry happy. Negan tells the doctor that Dwight told him the whole story, which he claims Sherry told him before being torn apart by walkers which we know isn’t true. As Negan goes to press the fire-hot iron to the doctor’s face he confesses to everything to avoid being burned like Dwight. Negan smiles and drops the iron… and then throws the doctor straight into the fire without warning. Eugene watches this in horror from just a few feet away.
Later the two wives return to Eugene’s room to get the pills, but he refuses to give them to them. He knows they want them for Negan and when he tells them that they threaten him. Eugene doesn’t cave, even as they call him a coward, and they leave in defeat. Once he’s alone again he gets another visitor: Negan. He is there to check on Eugene but also make sure that “Doctor Smartypants” knows he has to walk a specific line in order to continue receiving such good treatment. Negan then starts to ask him who he is, but before he can finish Eugene tells him he’s Negan. “Utterly” and “completely” Negan, to be more specific.
As the episode comes to an end we watch Eugene bossing around some prisoners as they cover the walkers in metal like he instructed when he first arrived. He looks a little too comfy in the position which even Dwight notices, but Eugene is adjusting. His last words as the episode closes? “We are Negan.” Yikes.
