The magic is back! The Los Angeles Lakers made Magic Johnson their new president of basketball operations on Feb. 21, after firing their general manager and executive vice president! Fans were thrilled with the house cleaning, saying Magic has the touch to make the Lakers great again!
Say good-bye to Mitch Kupchak, 62, and Jim Buss, 57. The Los Angeles Lakers cut ties with their former general manager and executive VP on Feb. 21, before promoting Magic Johnson, 57, to President of Basketball Operations. It was part of “front office restructuring,” the team said in a statement.
It’s a dream come true to return to the Lakers as President of Basketball Operations working closely with Jeanie Buss and the Buss family,” said Magic (real name Earvin) Johnson. “Since 1979, I’ve been a part of the Laker Nation and I’m passionate about this organization. I will do everything I can to build a winning culture on and off the court. We have a great coach in Luke Walton and good young players. We will work tirelessly to return our Los Angeles Lakers to NBA champions.”
Magic joined the team in an advisory role at the start of Feb., but it was clear that he wanted to be in charge. He wanted to “call the shots, because it only works that way,’’ he told USA TODAY. “Right now I’m advising. I get that. But at the end of the day, then we all got to come together and somebody’s got to say, ‘I’m making the final call,’ all right? And who’s that going to be? So, we’ll see what happens.’’
It seems that person is Magic, and the fans are thrilled. Some were shocked to see Jeanie Buss, 55, fire her brother and put Magic in charge, but most were glad to see a change in leadership. “It’s officially a new Era in LAL,” one wrote, while others say Magic’s next trick is turning the team’s “L’s into W’s.” Others wondered how long it was going to be before he brings Kobe Bryant, 38, on board.
Mitch did us good but I'm glad he's out as the GM, that decision was long overdue. Let's see what LA can do now #Lakers

Actually, seeing “Black Mamba” return to the Lakers is not unreasonable, now that Magic’s in charge. “First call I make if I’m in charge? Kobe Bryant,” Magic said, according to CBS Sports. “Because Kobe understands winning. He understands, also, these players. I would call: ‘What role you want? … If you’ve got a day, just give me that day.’ I’ll take that. Whatever time he has, I want him to come and be a part of it.” Well, the team is now in need of a general manager and Kobe, since retiring, has a lot of free time on his hands. Hmmmm.
What do you think about Magic being named the President of Basketball Operations, HollywoodLifers? Do you think it was the right decision?
