Patagonia is way ahead of Giving Tuesday! The outdoorsy outfitter donated ALL of the money made from every single black Friday sale to environmental organizations around the world. Their contributions totaled to $10 million. That’s seriously incredible.
Today is Giving Tuesday and Patagonia is the gift that keeps on giving. The high-end outdoor apparel brand donated 100 percent of their proceeds made on Black Friday to hundreds of small, underfunded environmental organizations around the globe. Customers began to call the idea a “fundraiser for earth” and showed up on Nov. 25 to give Patagonia a record-breaking day. The company made five times its own expectation, and, as promised, donated it all to help make the world a safer, healthier place.
“We felt that these were issues that united us and I think this is a demonstration that people agree,” Patagonia spokeswoman Corley Kenna told The Huffington Post. “Our customers agree.”
While the outfitter has always been charitable towards environmental protection, donating 1 percent of its daily global sales to green-friendly causes, its approach has changed since the election of future president Donald Trump. The president-elect has written off climate change as a “hoax” and plans to do away with several of the initiatives President Obama has taken in his tenure to control global warming and decrease gas emissions. Patagonia is joined by hundreds of big businesses, including Starbucks Coffee, GAP Inc., General Mills and L’Oreal, in fighting back against Trump and his fellow deniers.
“The science is telling us loud and clear: We have a problem,” Patagonia wrote in a release on Monday, Nov. 28. “By getting active in communities, we can raise our voices to defend policies and regulations that will protect wild places and wildlife, reduce carbon emissions, build a modern energy economy based on investment in renewables, and, most crucially, ensure the United States remains fully committed to the vital goals set forth in the Paris Agreement on climate change.”
