Ellen DeGeneres shared with her audience on November 29 the details of her incredible experience being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She became emotional talking about the honor! But of course, she cracked some jokes, too! Click through to watch!
“I don’t know if you heard, but last week I received the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” Ellen told the audience on her November 29 episode. “I hope your Thanksgiving was good. That was my Thanksgiving; it was probably my best one ever in my entire life. I’ve known this for about a month, that I was gonna get it, but I couldn’t say anything because it was top secret and I couldn’t let that fall into the hands of the Russians….
“I was so honored to be with that group of people. It was amazing,” she continued. “The ceremony was incredible. If you haven’t seen what President Obama said…it was beautiful. I don’t even know how to express in words how honored I felt getting that from the President of the United States who I love so very much, so how I will express it is …I will express my gratitude with a dance.”
So lovely! Ellen was visibly emotional while receiving the honor from President Obama on November 22 at the White House. As the president hung the medal around her neck, Ellen cried. It was a beautiful moment for the woman Obama commended for telling us all to “just keep swimming.”
On Ellen, she also talked about pulling off that incredible White House mannequin challenge! It turns out that it was she, Rita Wilson and Tracee Ellis Ross who came up with the idea, and convinced everyone else to go along — even if they had to take a lot of time explaining to people like Robert De Niro what it was!
