It’s that time of year again! Barack Obama celebrated an annual White House tradition on Nov. 23, pardoning the final two turkeys of his presidency! While both were spared from the chopping block, one was also named the National Thanksgiving Turkey! Get the scoop.
Thanksgiving is right around the corner! To celebrate, Barack Obama, 55, continued a beloved yearly White House Tradition and pardoned the final turkeys of his presidency on Nov. 23. Two lucky birds named Tater and Tot were spared from the dinner table and after their reprieve, they will be sent to their new home at Virginia Tech. Joined by his nephews, the POTUS began, “It’s my job to grant them clemency this afternoon. I want to take a moment to recognize the brave turkeys who weren’t so lucky, that didn’t to ride the gravy train to freedom.” The ceremony took place at 2:45 PM ET, and the bird announced as the National Thanksgiving Turkey was TOT!

Both male turkeys are around 18 weeks old, according to the official press release. Raised on a family farm in Iowa, they began their long journey to Washington on Nov. 20. But, these aren’t just any normal birds, oh no. Tater’s favorite jam is Meghan Trainor‘s spicy single “Me Too.” He also struts with a swagger and has a “strong” gobble style. In comparison, Tot walks with a relaxed saunter and he’s more of a Justin Timberlake fan, as his song of choice is “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” The President first pardoned two turkeys back in 2009, per the request of his daughters Malia and Sasha, saving the lives of Courage and Carolina.
Since 1947, the chairman of the National Turkey Federation has presented a turkey to the POTUS, who grants a pardon to the bird of their choice! Barack definitely kept the crowd laughing, even with his profound statement. “This is the last time I’m doing this, so we’re not leaving any room for leftovers! On this Thanksgiving, I want to express my sincere gratitude to the American people. We want to thank you so very, very much.” He concluded with a suiting joke, “Lets get on with the pardoning since Thanksgiving traffic can put people in a foul mood.” LOL!
