What would the world of soccer be without Neymar on the field? Spanish prosecutors have called for the 24-year-old superstar to be jailed for two years due to corruption issues during his 2013 transfer from Brazilian club Santos. The case against the Barcelona forward comes from a complaint by DIS, a Brazilian investment group that owned 40 percent of the star’s transfer rights and claims they got way less money than they were supposed to because Barcelona concealed the real transfer fee.
Neymar’s not the only one in trouble in this case though, as a judge also wants to throw the book at former Barcelona president Sandro Rosell, calling for him to be jailed for five years and demanding and a fine of $8.8 million dollars! While in the high-priced world of European soccer that might not seem like much money, the prison term sure sounds scary! Sandro resigned as Barcelona FC’s president in 2014 after his role in the Neymar corruption scandal and testified in court in Feb. in the case.
While Neymar, his father and Sandro are set to stand trial, even if he is found guilty under the Spanish legal system two-year prison sentences are usually suspended. So the likelihood of Neymar ever getting pulled from the team and put behind bars is almost nil. Not only that, it would cause a total uproar among Barcelona FC’s legion of fans, as he’s been such a key member of the team. Since he started playing for them, Neymar has helped bring the club two La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, the Champions League, the European Super Cup, the Spanish Super Cup and the Club World Cup. Whew, now THAT is dominance! He’s going to be around for a long time too as he just signed a five-year contract in Oct. keeping him with the team through 2021.
HollywoodLifers, do you think Neymar would ever end up going to jail? Or is he too big a superstar to ever wind up behind bars?
