Laurie Hernandez is your new ‘DWTS’ champion! In a post-win interview, the 16-year-old athlete revealed how winning the coveted mirror ball trophy compares to winning gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Does she value one over the other? Plus, where is she going to put her mirror ball trophy?
“Honestly, they feel like they are tied with each other!” Laurie, 16, said in an interview after the DWTS finale. “With the Olympics as a kid it was such a big goal that I created for myself, and I was able to push through and make that happen. So for the mirror ball, I always loved to dance and my passion was dancing as well as gymnastics. So winning the mirror ball today was insane and amazing!”
What a year this has been for Laurie! From the Olympics to DWTS, she has been unstoppable. Laurie revealed that she will be probably be putting the mirror ball trophy next to her Olympics medals in a special place in her house.
Laurie and her partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, 30, were frontrunners on Dancing With the Stars from the very beginning. They became friends instantly and worked effortlessly to create magic in the ballroom.
“She is so special, especially working with such a young, inspiring lady I wanted to set an example through her,” Val said about working with Laurie. “I wanted her to set an example for her generation that anything is possible and to stay hungry and stay humble! She is exceptional at that!”
Dancing With The Stars season 23 came down to Laurie, race car driver James Hinchcliffe, 29, and former professional football player Calvin Johnson, 31 in the finale. All three were exceptional dancers and performed their hearts out in the finale. James ended up in second place and Calvin in third. The win marks Val’s second DWTS win. He won with partner Rumer Willis, 28, in season 20. Congrats again to Laurie and Val!
