The holidays are here! Which means family, friends, and a ton of extra calories. You can avoid weight gain with a couple easy tips — read what an expert Dietitian says below!
SUBWAY Global Dietitian Lanette Kovachi is offering some easy to follow advice to ditch the guilt this holiday season!
Lanette told HollywoodLife.com 4 easy tips:
“What to Eat Leading Up to That Big Holiday Meal
It is definitely ok to budget your calories when expecting to eat a big meal. Go a little lighter on meals and snacks prior to, sticking to foods that fill you up but don’t pack in a lot of calories (fresh veggies or fresh fruit paired with lean proteins). Whatever you do, don’t skip meals, as it will put your body into starvation mode and turn you into an over-eating machine.”
“Portion Size is Key
A good rule of thumb is to keep the starchy foods like stuffing, potatoes and rolls to ¼ of the plate, protein to the other quarter, and veggie-based sides for ½ (keep in mind that you should just try to cover your plate and not pile food so high that it resembles the Rocky Mountains!).”
“Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
Make water your best friend, especially during the holidays. Whether running errands, shopping or catching up with your squad for a meal, just drink water. Keeping hydrated is important to keeping energy up, reducing hunger, and it’s much better for you than those warm, sugary seasonal drinks that can add on a lot of unnecessary, empty calories.”
“Get Up and Move!
Incorporate activity into your holidays. Not only does this help burn off some of those extra calories you consume, it keeps you energized so you can enjoy family, friends and festivities. Start the day with a nice long walk, run or hit the gym. After the main meal, rally friends and family to join in on game of flag football.”
