Tennessee bus driver, Johnthony Walker, has been arrested after five children were killed in a horrible accident while he was behind the wheel on Nov. 21. The Chattanooga community is in mourning following the horrific crash.
Five innocent children were confirmed dead after a school bus flipped over onto its side on Nov. 21, and now, the driver, Johnthony Walker, 24, has been arrested, Chattanooga Police Chief, Fred Fletcher, confirms. Johnthony was charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving.
Besides the five deceased kids — which includes three fourth graders, a first grader and a kindergartener — there are also six students still in intensive care and six others hospitalized. 35 children were riding the bus. Police revealed that Johnthony is cooperating with the investigation, although there are still a lot of “unanswered questions” at this time.
It’s suspected that speed was a factor in the horrifying crash, during which the bus swerved off the road and slammed into a tree. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash and driving conditions were clear on the afternoon of the accident. “He was going real fast and he hit a garbage bag,” a student on the bus revealed. “And then we hit a mailbox, then we flipped over and hit a tree real hard.”
“Taking care of the children that are injured is our No. 1 priority,” Fletcher said. “Taking care of the families who are looking for, caring for and grieving for our children is our second priority.” Hundreds of donors have lined up to give blood to those in need, the entire Chattanooga community has come together to get through this incredibly difficult time.
