Zayn Malik’s reference to One Direction in his AMAs speech on Nov. 20 might have made the band insecure. But Zayn doesn’t know what for. HollywoodLife.com has learned EXCLUSIVELY that the solo artist thought it was ‘funny.’ But did he also mean for it to be offensive? Get the scoop here!
“Zayn [Malik] felt like he couldn’t NOT make a One Direction reference in his acceptance speech,” a source told HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “He thought it was funny. His intention was definitely not to offend anyone. He went over his speech with Gigi [Hadid] countless times and she thought it was genuine and not mean-spirited at all. Zayn is still on cloud nine after his big win and right now has nothing but love and gratitude for everyone.” Aww.
Well, we think the 23-year-old singer’s 1D reference was actually kinda funny. After all, Zayn looked kinda stunned on Nov. 20 when he took the stage at the 2016 AMAs to accept his Best New Artist trophy. He said in amazement, “this one just has my name on it, right?” Aw, come on, who didn’t laugh at that? Seeing as Zayn is no stranger to awards, but won them when he was still with 1D, he had every right to crack a joke that he had finally snagged one as a solo artist. It definitely was not meant to offend.
We’re so proud of Zayn for taking home the Best New Artist award and we hope that his former bandmates can find it in their hearts to let bygones be bygones and be proud of him too. Sometimes you have to make it on your own and that’s what Zayn is trying his best to do. And we’re sure he will never forget 1D. After all, he never would have made it to where he is now without them!
