It’s the name on every NFL fan’s lips: Dak Prescott! The Dallas Cowboys’ rookie quarterback, taking over for an injured Tony Romo, has led the team to a phenomenal winning streak, so get to know more about football’s newest star.
1. He got his big shot thanks to Tony Romo’s bad luck
Dak, 23, (real name Rayne Dakota Prescott) was not expected to be the Cowboys starter in 2016, but he had to step up after tragedy struck in Week 3. While playing the Seattle Seahawks, Tony Romo, 36, suffered a vertebral compression fracture. Oh no!
With Tony out for 8-10 weeks, Dak was given the ball. Though his first game as a starter resulted in a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants, he has clearly worked out the kinks. The Cowboys are now 9-1, the best record in the NFL!
2. Despite being awesome, he wasn’t a first round Draft pick.
All those NFL teams that passed up Dak in the 2016 NFL Draft are kicking themselves now. The Cowboys picked Dak in the fourth round (135th overall.) That means 134 other players were picked before him. If that seems nuts, there’s a reason: In March 2016, Dak was arrested for driving under the influence. Two breathalyzer tests couldn’t provide a valid result and in July 2016, he was found “not guilty.” Still, the damage was done, as sources say the arrest hurt his Draft prospect, according to NFL.com.
3. He remains close with his mother, though she’s no longer with us.
Dak picked his jersey number, #4, in tribute to his mother, Peggy Prescott, who was born on Sept. 4, according to 5 Points Blue. Sadly, his mother passed away from colon cancer in Nov. 2013, but she is close to his heart whenever he goes out on the field.
4. He’s crazy educated.
Don’t let the “dumb jock” stereotype fool you – Dak’s super smart. He was a three-time member of the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll and he holds two college degrees: one in Educational Psychology and a Masters’ in Workforce Leadership.
5. Football’s not his only sport.
This Louisiana native loves to fish. He showed off his love for the sport in an Instagram pic, posing with his friends – and the fish they had caught. “A morning well spent, rippin’ lips,” he captioned the shot. It seems that when he’s not launching bombs on the field to wide receivers, he’s launching lures to catch himself dinner. Nice.
What do you think about Dak Prescott, HollywoodLifers? Do you think the Dallas Cowboys will make it to the Super Bowl?
