Kate Gosselin stands by her decision to send her son Collin, 12, away to live in a learning facility! Opening up in a rare interview to discuss her parenting challenges and controversies, the mom-of-eight got super honest about her son’s situation, even revealing that it was ‘necessary’ for him to leave her household. Watch the raw interview here.
Being a mom of eight — to one set of twins and one set of sextuplets — Kate Gosselin, 41, has faced many tough parenting decisions throughout the years. But perhaps the most difficult of all was when she decided to send her 12-year-old son Collin “away” due to his “special needs.” But despite Collin no longer living with the family, Kate revealed that her choice was undoubtedly the right move to make, and that it wasn’t actually a decision at all!

“It was not even really a choice,” Kate said on Good Morning America on Nov. 21. “It was on the advice of his doctors and it had to happen.” As for how Collin’s doing? “He’s plodding along and we are, too, but it definitely was necessary,” Kate added. “I’ll go to the ends of the earth for the best for each one of them. This is the best thing I can do for him right now, and so that comforts me.”
And while Kate admitted that she is allowed to have contact with her son, it’s “not the same as being at home.” Addressing reports that she has abused her kids, the reality star called reports that her son told staffers at his treatment facility that was abused by her, “unfounded.” “I’m in the public eye. I have been investigated many times … It’s always unfounded obviously,” Kate said.
Her ex-husband Jon Gosselin, 39, claimed that he has not actually seen their son Collin in a year and a half and on top of that, that Kate won’t tell him where Collin is being treated! “We are both court ordered not to talk about the care and custody of our children in detail,” Kate explained on the morning show. “I’ve known all along where he is, but the world doesn’t know…and I’ll leave it at that.”
But after 10 years of being in the spotlight with her family, Kate did reveal that she’s changed a lot — and that we’ll be able to see this new version of Kate once her TLC show, Kate Plus 8, comes back on the air for a fifth season on Nov. 22. “I almost don’t even know [my old self],” Kate admitted. “Now it’s like, the wisdom, the experience, it makes you really a better parent.”
For those who need a refresher, Kate opened up about Collin back in August, telling People mag that she had enrolled her son in a program away from home that is helping him reach his full potential — and that it is “precisely what he needs.”
“Collin has special needs,” Kate said. “[There’s] a fairly fluid diagnosis of what those needs are, but he needs to learn certain strategies to help him deal with things. This has been a struggle we’ve had for a very long time, and it’s one I’ve dealt with on my own.”
Reflecting back, Kate now knows it was the best decision she could have made for her family. “This is all new to me, and to our family,” the mother told the publication this month. “I don’t know what the road ahead entails, but I’m very happy with the care that he’s getting, and am still completely comforted by the fact that he is so clearly exactly where he needs to be, getting precisely what he needs — it comforts me as a mother, because when you, as a mom, can’t give your kids what they need, it is a huge comfort to find people who can,” she added.
Tell us, HollywoodLifers — do you think it’s right for Kate not to tell Jon where Collin is staying?
