The cast of ‘Hamilton’ dropped a truth bomb on Vice-president elect Mike Pence on Nov. 18 when he attended the Broadway musical. After the show ended, one of the lead actors came forward with a brave message directed at Mike, letting him know that the cast, and the American people, are afraid of the new administration. Brandon Dixon plays the third vice-president of the United States, Aaron Burr in Hamilton: An American Musical. And in a weird twist of fate he got the chance to address the soon to be 48th vice-president, Mike Pence, on Nov. 18 when Mike showed up at the Broadway show. So, Brandon and the cast naturally took that opportunity very seriously, and put forth a brave statement when the extremely unpopular elected official (who had been booed throughout the entire show) began to exit the theater after the musical ended.
“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you so much for joining us tonight,” Brandon told the audience as they gave their standing ovation at the end of the show. “You know, we had a guest in the audience this evening. And Vice-president elect Pence, I see you walking out but I hope you will hear us just a few more moments,” Brandon said directly to Mike, who was already leaving the theater. “There’s nothing to boo here ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing to boo here. Were all here sharing a story of love. We have a little message for you sir and you hope that you will hear us out. And I encourage everyone to pull out your phones and tweet and post because this message needs to be spread far and wide, OK?” Brandon said before beginning his direct plea to Mike.
“Vice-president elect Pence we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical, we really do. We sir, we, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us. Again we truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.” Preach!
Though Mike was seen exiting as Brandon gave the speech (which was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as the director, producer and cast when they heard Mike was attending the show), a representative from the show said that the vice president-elect did stand in the hallway outside and hear the entire thing. Well, that’s something, at least!
