Boxing movies aren’t hard to come by these days, but Bleed For This is a solid addition to the genre. Miles Teller stars as boxer Vinny Pazienza at the height of his career in the 1990s. Vinny thinks he’s invincible until he breaks his neck in a horrific car accident.
While the doctors and his family are concerned about whether or not he’ll walk again, Vinny just wants to know when he can fight again. Instead of a spinal fusion that will guarantee he can walk again, Vinny opts to get a halo so he can make his way back into the ring. Vinny teams up with an alcoholic trainer (Aaron Eckhart) to help him get back into shape when no one else will.
Miles loss more than 20 pounds for movie’s initial fight scenes, and then gained nearly all of it back for the final match. While his physical transformation is incredible, the role of Vinny allows Miles to flex his acting muscles like never before. Miles has a knack for taking on roles with extra emotional depth beneath the tough-guy facade, and he’s in his prime in Bleed For This.
Miles is the heart and soul of the film. Even with Vinny’s flaws, Miles is able to make Vinny’s determination and confidence stand out. Miles is able to seamlessly exude a vulnerability and high-powered energy as Vinny. When you watch the movie, you feel as if you’re watching Vinny’s fight and not a fictional portrayal. That’s how effortless Miles’ metamorphosis is.
Miles continues to prove time and time again that he is one of the best young actors out there. This performance proves he can handle the adult roles and is a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood. With Bleed For This, Miles enters the Oscars race and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Bleed For This, directed by Ben Younger, will hit theaters on Nov. 18.
