Forget any beauty advice that’s ever told you to skip the eyeliner on the lower lash line. Celebrities like Olivia Munn and Karlie Kloss have been rocking reverse smokey eye makeup, and it couldn’t be cooler for any upcoming holiday parties. Get the details on their looks and how to copy them, ahead!
Dark under eye liner is a makeup look we’ve pretty much stopped wearing since high school, opting for classic cat eye and softer smoked out looks on our upper lash lines only. But the lower lash line is getting a modern update thanks to makeup artists like Patrick Ta and Hung Vanngo, and we already can’t wait to give it a try this holiday season.
Essentially creating a reverse smokey eye, Patrick and Hung both created colorful liner looks for Olivia Munn and Karlie Kloss on Nov. 15. First up, Patrick gave Olivia a diffused cobalt blue liner on her lower lash line that matched her blue ensemble.
Leaving the rest of her makeup simple with barely-there foundation that let her freckles peek through, Patrick made Olivia’s eye makeup the statement of her look. Adding a touch of matte brown eyeshadow to her lids, Patrick then used a blue eyeliner like the Lancôme Le Stylo Waterproof Long Lasting Eyeliner in Sapphire, applying it along the lower lash line only and smudging it out for a smokey effect. To complete the look, Patrick curled Olivia’s lashes and added a coat of black mascara to her top and lower lashes.
Meanwhile, Hung went for a more dramatic dark eyeliner look, giving Karlie a smoked out plum eyeliner and shadow combo. To get the look, Hung first defined Karlie’s eyes with a classic black eyeliner, rimming her upper and lower lash lines and connecting the lines in a cat eye shape. For the smokey purple finish, use a shadow like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24hr Eyeshadow in Smoldering Plum, applying and blending across your lids and underneath your lower lash line.
