Things are changing for the better on Tinder! In hopes of becoming more inclusive, the dating app upped its gender options from 2 to 37 after learning of harassment faced by users who don’t identify as just male or female. Learn all about the update here!
#AllTypesAllSwipes — that’s the newest motto on Tinder! An update on Nov. 15 changed things in a big way for transgender users, who had trouble meeting people on the app because the only gender options to select were originally ‘male’ or ‘female.’
“Six months ago we discovered that the transgender community on Tinder was experiencing some harassment on the platform,” CEO Sean Rad explained. “When we initially heard about it, we were very angry.” Now, there are 37 options to choose from: Along with the original male and female, there’s also choices like ‘transgender female’ and ‘genderqueer,’ along with a blank space to write in one’s own identity.
This won’t be the final update of the sort, either. “Gender is a complex conversation — it’s an ongoing dialogue,” Rad said, adding that this function of the app will continue to evolve as gender does. In addition to the new choices, Tinder’s moderation team is also making greater efforts to make sure transgender users aren’t banned unfairly for being reported by fellow users, which had been happening in the past.
“[This is[ an important step forward and a message to tens of millions of users that transgender and gender non-conforming people are welcome,” GLAAD’s Transgender Media Program director confirmed. “What the app’s update does provide is the ability for people to self-identify in more expansive and encompassing ways that truly reflect who they are with a fill-in-the-blank feature.” Start swiping, everyone!
