Carrison was real, you guys. Carrie Fisher shocked the world when she revealed that she had an affair with Harrison Ford in 1976, during the original ‘Star Wars’ — but why did she release this now? And how did Harrison feel about the confession?
“It’s been 40 years!” Carrie Fisher, 60, told People, about why she revealed the affair with Harrison Ford in her new book, The Princess Diarist. “I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.” The book, out November 22, includes journals that the actress, 19 at the time, kept while filming the first Star Wars film. Granted, Carrie did give her costar a heads up before publishing it.
“He went, ‘Lawyer!'” she told the site, adding that she also sent him a draft for notes — but didn’t receive any from him.“I called him and said, ‘Where are you? I’m sending it to you,'” she told the magazine. “I don’t want to embarrass anyone and he’s very private. I said, ‘I know you’re not going to be excited but…'”
“I think I waited an appropriate amount of time,” she added. “How much longer could I wait?”
In the book, Carrie also reveals “intense” details of the three-month affair she had with a then 34-year-old Harrison — it all started at creator George Lucas‘ 32nd birthday party, where male crew members were trying to get Carrie to have a drink, and they got feisty so Harrison stepped in. “Mr. Ford thew my virtue and me into the backseat of his studio car and commanded the driver to ‘Go! GO!'” It was in that car that they kissed for the first time. Later that evening they met up with Mark Hamill and others before heading back to Carrie’s place.
“In the taxi, Harrison pulled me back into the seat, moving us closer and closer together until we were two faces, four eyes, one kiss, going to the place where we could rehearse that kissing we would be doing a year and a half later in The Empire Strikes Back,” she revealed. Afterward, she invited him in and “things moved closely.”
She clearly was moved by him, and was still very insecure. She reflected about the time they spent after sleeping together, writing, “Afterward, I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow — watching the horizon for danger. Reflective concerned eyes, so deep in thought you could get lost down there. How you could ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?” After that, for three months or so, they reserved “sleepovers” for weekends. She kept diaries because she couldn’t discuss it with anyone — he was married to his first wife, Mary Marquardt, with two children.
However, Hamill and a crew member stopped by Harrison’s place one morning, where she was — and it was clear she had stayed over. “Harrison took my hand and pronounced solemnly, ‘We’re engaged.’ It was mocking the suggestion that there was anything going on; therefore, it couldn’t be true.”
A Carrison Update
Today, Carrie looks back at their romance and is filled with respect for him. So, why tell the story at all? Well, she wanted the readers to know “I wasn’t always a somewhat-overweight woman without an upper lip to her name,” she wrote. “I was once a relevant piece of ass who barely knew she existed while much of the rest of the moviegoing world saw me romping through the air in a metal bikini.”‘
As for those hoping “Carrison” could have a future — well, don’t hold your breath. “There’s still time for Carrison to grow old together, but that gateway is steadily closing,” she wrote. “If we’re going to get back together, we’re going to have to do it soon. And getting back together with someone you were never truly with is, to say the least, complicated. My hopes aren’t high.”
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked by her reveal?
