CoverGirl’s first male spokesmodel headed over to the ‘Ellen’ show on Nov. 14 to show off his debut commercial with the makeup brand. Chatting all things beauty with the talk show host, click ahead to find out how James Charles got his start in makeup and landed the coveted contract at age 17!
YouTube and Instagram makeup star James Charles made history earlier this fall when he was announced as CoverGirl‘s first male ambassador. To debut his CoverGirl So Lashy! Mascara commercial, James joined Ellen DeGeneres (another CoverGirl spokesmodel) to tell her all about working with the brand and meeting Katy Perry, of course.
Building a following of nearly 1 million on his Instagram page, James told Ellen he had been posting his daily makeup looks on Instagram for just a year before CoverGirl approached him after the makeup for his high school senior portraits went viral.
“It took a lot of explaining and a lot of understanding,” James told Ellen of when he decided he wanted to wear makeup and do makeup. “Men in makeup obviously is a very new concept. It has not been widely accepted in the past, so it was definitely a learning process,” he went on to say, adding that his family and friends were always very supportive of him.
Talking about his mascara commercial with CoverGirl, James shared that fellow Covergirl ambassador Katy Perry surprised him on set. “I flew to LA, we shot the commercial [and] they told me I was going to need to stay later,” James said. “I was like ‘I wanna go home, take this makeup off and take a nap,’ and then, of course, it was worth it when Katy Perry showed up,” he said laughing. “Suddenly I could’ve stayed up for the next 48 days!”
