Donald Trump won the presidency on Nov. 8, and according to a new report, Google searches for the phrase ‘how to impeach a president’ rose by almost 5,000% just one day later. Whoa! Get all of the details — and find out what it would take to impeach Trump — right here.
It’s safe to say that Donald Trump, 70, is going to be one of our most controversial presidents of all time, and people are already preparing for him making good on his unconstitutional promises from his campaign trail. Democrat-voting Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado were the top five states to search the question of how a president can be impeached, according to Google Trends, via a Nov. 9 Metro report.
“So how quickly can we impeach Trump?” is the burning question being asked by people on Twitter. Well, it’s not that easy. Impeachment is when a formal accusation is made against a president or other United States official, once he or she is in office, and it’s an intense process.
First, the House of Representatives decides whether or not the President should be impeached. The Senate holds a trial, and the House Judiciary Committee compiles a list of the Articles of Impeachment. The House of Representatives then votes on it, and the issue does or doesn’t go to trial, held by the Senate.
The President is represented by lawyers, House members serve as prosecutors and the Senate meets privately to decide on removing the President from office. Finally, there must be a 2/3 vote in the Senate for a conviction.
Only two presidents have ever been impeached — Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton — but neither was convicted. It’s also worth nothing that when Trump takes office, each branch will be Republican-controlled.
By the way, Google searches for “how to immigrate to Canada”, “how to become a Canadian citizen” and “how to move to Canada from US” have all spiked, too. Is anyone surprised?!
