Well, that’s one way to find out you landed the role of a lifetime. Tom Holland discovered he would be playing Spider-Man in the most random way possible about a month after his audition. Prepare for your mind to be blown!
“I was in my bed scrolling through Instagram. It had been about a month since my audition. And Marvel just posted a photo saying go to our website and find out who the next Spider-Man is,” Tom, 20, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I went on the Marvel website on my computer and there it was: The new Spider-Man is Tom Holland. I went ballistic, like absolutely nuts.”
What?! That’s insane! Can you imagine just checking a website and discovering that you’d just landed the role that practically every young actor in Hollywood wants? A little heads up would have been nice!
Tom submitted an audition tape showing off his skills as a gymnast. He also revealed how intense the audition process was for the role of Spider-Man. “When we did the screen tests, there were six of us all in this room waiting to audition. It felt like The Hunger Games,” he said. “It was a real weird atmosphere because there’s all these kids who really, really want this role. They were like, ‘We’ll let you know tomorrow.’ Then you find out a month later what the verdict was.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released on July 7, 2017. The movie also stars Zendaya, 20, Michael Keaton, 65, Marisa Tomei, 51, and Robert Downey Jr, 51. Tom is under contract to star in three more Spider-Man movies if Homecoming does well at the box office. It’s pretty much a guarantee that we’re going to be seeing a lot more of Tom in the near future!
