Out of the tens of thousands of runners who came to the Big Apple from around the world, Mary Keitany outran them all in the women’s division at the 46th NYC Marathon! This is her third straight year taking first place. You go, girl!
Run, Mary Keitany, run! Mary, 34, dominated the 2016 NYC Marathon’s women’s race, and crossed the finished line first after 2 hours, 24 minutes and 26 seconds of running! Whoa. 26.2 miles in less than 145 minutes. That is FAST!
In fact, she was so fast that after the halfway mark, she ran the rest of the race alone. Mary is only the second woman to win three years in a row. The only person to do it before her was Grete Waitz of Norway, whom according to the New York Times, did it in both the 1970s and the 1980s.

The NYC Marathon attracts people from all over the world to make their way to the Big Apple and run the streets of New York in one of the most popular marathons of the year. The race began on the morning of Nov. 6 at 9 am, with runners taking off in Staten Island, NY and making their way up through Manhattan, into the Bronx and coming back down to finish in Central Park. That is loooooooong!
Just behind her was Sally Kipyego in 2:28:01. Molly Huddle of the United States finished third in 2:28:13.
Mary won the women’s division of the marathon the past two years as well. Last year, the marathoner crushed her previous year’s time and finished in 2:24:25, more than a minute ahead of her closest competitor.
No matter what the final times are, every NYC Marathon runner did an incredible job! Congratulations on many amazing finishes, and especially to Mary Keitany on the first place win!
